Newton’s leg was amputated in May after he suffered severe problems as a result of an infected toe. He had previously been taken to the hospital for pneumonia in 2017 and undergone quadruple heart bypass surgery in 2012.

“Bert Newton was a legend, a rogue, and a natural entertainer. Bert was there from the birth of television, so we’ve never known it without him.”

He went on to say:

“Above all, he was a family man, and his greatest collaboration was with Patti, his wife of over 50 years.” “We will all get an opportunity to honor his legacy, his talent, and his achievements during a state funeral, which we will all attend.” In the next days, further information will be released.”

The funeral is most likely to take place at Melbourne’s St Patrick’s Cathedral.

Professional Career

Bert began his broadcasting career in 1952 as a junior broadcaster on Melbourne radio station 3XY. He became the host of Melbourne Speaks, a street-recorded program, two years later.

The star moved to television soon after, hosting The Late Show before debuting in 1959 on In Melbourne Today. He quickly joined the sister show In Melbourne Tonight, where he co-hosted with Graham Kennedy, the King of Television, and became a regular.

He hosted The Bert Newton Show in the early 1960s, and he and his co-host, Graham Kennedy, appeared on Channel 9’s The Graham Kennedy Show on a weekly basis. Following a brief return to radio, he was cast as Don Lane’s “barrel boy” in The Don Lane Show in 1975, giving him the nickname “Moonface.”

After departing Nine in 2005, Newton signed a three-year deal with the network and went on to anchor Bert’s Family Feud, 20 To 1, and What A Year.

He even co-hosted the 2006 Logies alongside previous Gold Logie winners Lisa McCune, Georgie Parker, Ray Martin, and Daryl Somers and was the show’s only host in 2010 and  went on to host the show over 20 times in total.

Newton has also performed the Wizard in a number of musical theater plays, including Beauty And The Beast (1995), The Sound Of Music (1999), The Producers (2012), Grease (2013), and Wicked (2009).
